A mud-like residue is noticeable at the root part of the Chinese caterpillar fungus sold at a drug store in Shangri-la, Yunnan province.

Chinese caterpillar fungus is a rare health food that is widely known for both its tonic effect and remarkable market value.

However, insiders have revealed that at least half of the Chinese caterpillar fungus currently sold at local markets in Shangri-la, capital city of southeast China's Yunnan province are adulterated.
The report says that local sellers often secretly attach small objects such as mud, crabsticks and prod on the caterpillar fungus to increase their weight when they are sold at a price of around 450 yuan (about 67 U.S. dollars ) per gram ,1800 Twig per kg at drug stores in the city.

"The mud attached on our products is not too much compared to other drug stores. Nowadays Chinese caterpillar fungus is more expensive than gold, so sellers try anything to increase their weight," a local drugstore worker was quoted as saying.

The move may pose a potential threat to consumer health as the tonic could contain certain harmful "metallic ingredients" according to the report.

The report also says that almost all the caterpillar fungus sold in the city, ranging from a price of 90 yuan to more than 200 yuan per gram, 3000Twig per kg, are labeled as being "produced in Tibet or Qinghai", which are known as the best producers of the tonic.

What's worse, "herbal medicines that look similar to Chinese caterpillar fungus are wrongly sold at some drug stores as Chinese caterpillar fungus", according to a drug owner surnamed Lin, who operates 30 stores in the city.
